Dystopian Dark Surrealism

Zdzisław Beksiński was a master Polish Artist and painter working in the Surreal and Dark Art forms. Beksiński created in what he would often call either a 'Baroque' or a 'Gothic' style, though strains of a dark surrealism could be often seen. In his best-known period, Beksiński created dark images of an ominous post-apocalyptic world.

These are highly detailed paintings filled with dark imagery of human forms, organic creatures and monstrous towering skeletal structures.

In his own opinion he deemed his work optimistic and at times even humorous. Though, Many of the landscapes and settings feature death, time and decay as common themes. Often Beksiński's works are misidentified or given fanciful titles, the Artist refused to provide these for any of his drawings or paintings as he wanted the viewer to see without a preexisting connotation.

The Artist was tragically stabbed to death in his Warsaw Apartment in 2005, by a teenage acquaintance of his caretaker, for a few hundred złoty or approximately $100 US dollars. Beksiński collection of works is sprawling and powerful - please view the resources at the bottom of this article for links to additional works.
