Jean Delville was a leading symbolist painter, author, poet, hermetic philosopher, teacher and occultist from Belgium. Delville helped organized the Salons d'Art Idéaliste (the Belgian Idealist movement); a group whose goal was to continue the tradition of idealistic or spiritual Artworks. Delville traced this idea-based concept all the way back to the ancient Greek and Egyptian esoteric traditions. Through his painting and ideologies he became a leading exponent of the Belgian idealist and symbolist movements during their height in the 1890s. Delville believed that our shared reality was truly symbolic in nature - a reflection of the higher planes of existence. His luminous paintings are often representative of the idea that our "inner light" or soul could be trapped by the physical human body. Delville's impressive output coincided with the height of popular occult movements in Europe.
