Kristian Wåhlin, also known as Necrolord, is a painter and musician ('The Great Deceiver' among others) who was brought up in Gothenburg, Sweden. His work employs dark fantasy, landscape settings and the 'powerful symbolism of life and death". Wåhlin names Caspar David Friedrich and the 1400-century painters Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Dürer as some of his foremost inspiration.
Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British painter who created grotesque and powerful works in oil. He used bold color and deformed figures to create a thoroughly modern yet horrific collection of art. Much has been written on Bacon who maintained a respect for the tenets of traditional art while displaying a dark array of emotion on canvas. Troubled during his life Bacon's art tells a tumultuous story of existence. We have chosen some of our favorite works below.
Mark Mazzoni is a colored pencil artist creating organic and masterfully detailed works on paper. Using colored pencil on Moleskin paper Mazzoni creates a limited, almost twilight, colored palette. The unique color choices and figure abstraction, often with organic shapes and items, create a striking visual mixture.
Glyn Smyth (Stag & Serpent), is a skilled designer and printmaker from Belfast, Ireland. You may recognize some of his work from metal/rock bands Unearthly Trance, Year of No Light and Sub Rosa's album art. His dark occult inspired creations evoke a mystical environment of cloaked figures and sacred geometry.
Guang Yang is a oil painter, digital artist and metal album creator based in Shanghai, China. His work utilizes traditional materials such as oil, acrylic, wax, and oil pastel along with modern digital tools. Yang has produced work for Slayer, Putridity, Majesty, Beheaded, Inherit Disease, Inanimate Existence, Xenomorphic Contamination among others.
John Martin was raised in a one room english cottage in a small Northumberland town, Haydon Bridge. From this modest upbring Martin would go on to create a vast collection of historical landscapes and a fortune to match. He was Influenced by the work of J.M.W. Turner as well as other history & landscape painters like Theodore Gericault and Salvator Rosa.
Ivan Albright was an American 'Magic Realist' artist that created highly detailed and dark paintings. The Magic Realist painters have been described as "Artists looking at the mundane through a hyper-realistic and often mysterious lens". During World War I Albright created medical drawings for a hospital in France, this grotesque task was thought to influence his later works.
A self described "California based fine artist, illustrator, and degenerate" Kevin Peterson creates dark dreamscapes in oil paint. His recent solo exhibition of oil paintings, the blue toned "Nocturne" appeared at the contemporary Marcus Gallery in California (Check them out in Santa Anna if you have a chance). The collection of paintings by Peterson is nothing short of mesmerizing.
DZO is a French graphic designer, illustrator and self-taught artist. His intricate artwork mimics engravings of religious and occult manuscripts and mixes them with mythic and dark themes. This cauldron of interests breeds an art fascinated with the natural and the unnatural. Incredibly detailed black ink drawings use the symbols of different cultures to illustrate DZO's vision. The regenerative cycle of life, birth through decay, is a common trait in his work.
Allison Sommers is a self-taught visual artist working primarily in gouache on paper. The Brooklyn-based artist creates complicated, intricate, sometimes uncomfortable worlds of meat, vegetation, birds and beasts of various sizes. The artist describers herself as an Art worker, flaneur and vulgarist. Sommers uses warm vibrant reds on paper to create her bizarre creatures and organs.
One of our favorite Fantasy Artists at Dark Art & Craft is master oil painter Frank Frazetta. Over his long career Frazetta produced detailed art for Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, John Carter of Mars and countless others. Frazetta defined the Fantasy and Science-Fiction art genres and at the same time transcended the rather orthodox world of pulp book covers and comic art to make his own name. Frazetta's primary and well known works are in oil paint, but he also worked with watercolor, ink and pencil all with a sharp technical proficiency.
Paul Romano is a fine artist and designer living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Romano's work often consists of vivid colors, mythical beasts and crisp typography. His work is unique among modern album artists as it is almost entirely created on canvas by hand. This traditional art process is done with a craftsman's eye.
Melissa Cooke is a graphite on paper fine artist dealing with complex and dark subject matter. Using a dry brush Cooke creates thin layers of graphite on paper which she then erases for highlights. This process gives her works a photorealist quality and a certain softness that removes heavy line work.
Yuri Shwedoff creates post apocalyptic, fantastic and surreal digital art works. His monochrome palette lends a mystery and fog to his collection of subtle toned paintings. Many of the works often leave only a single figure in a vast landscape, left to contemplate their surroundings.
Godmachine is a dark digital artist and illustrator born in Cardiff, South Wales. The artist grew up on a 'steady diet of nothing but, 2000AD comics, Santa Cruz skateboards and old library books of Klimt and Beardsley' (via godmachinedesigns.blogspot.com) and the pop culture references are apparent. Godmachine creates intricately detailed skulls, skeletons and morbid creatures for musician clients and his private collection.
A prolific wood and steel engraver, artist, illustrator, and sculptor Gustave Doré created epic visions of angels, demons, history and human tragedy. The Paradise Lost illustrations and Dante's Divine Comedy have become so praised that many have become pop culture items in their own right. Doré's works are narrative and iconic, featuring dramatic use of contrast and no aversion to darker themes. His large compositions and intricately detailed etching fits well with the historically weighty projects Dore commonly took on. Zdzisław Beksiński was a master Polish artist and painter working in the Surreal and Dark Art forms. Beksiński created in what he would often call either a 'Baroque' or a 'Gothic' style, though strains of a dark surrealism could be often seen. In his best-known period Beksiński created dark images of a surrealistic post-apocalyptic world.
Florian Bertmer is a German illustrator that works in the extreme metal and hardcore music scenes creating intricately detailed screen prints. His most common works focus on gruesome dark subjects, the Occult, and include a fascination with the colorful Art Nouveau style.
Caspar David Friedrich was key member of the Romantic Movement in Germany and forever altered landscape painting to include an intense emotional view. David, as many of the Romantic artists did, diminished man in the larger scale of life showing him in vast wilderness spaces. He took what others saw as land and scenery and imparted on them sweeping themes and overwhelming emotion.
Mark Cooper creates psychedelic landscapes and gruesome looking figures with his detailed digital art. Cooper's intensely colored works seem to form an alien and darkly organic atmosphere. Many of his works are for Death and Extreme Metal groups with recent work for Serpentspire, Master and Pessimist. This is a dark, psychedelic, and intensely detailed work that embraces the fantasy and dark roots of Metal.
A Dark Art & Craft favorite and an artist with strong sculptural roots, Odani Motohiko creates a world of technological advanced figures. These are dark futuristic works focusing on detailed structure and shape. The biomechanical shapes Odani makes breed a psychological state that induces fear, pain, unease.
Kris Kuksi has been called a post-industrial Rococo and Fantastic Realism sculptor. Kuksi obsessively places figures, small toys, mechanical components, objects and characters into an impressive often symmetrical compositions. Kuksi’s influence is taken heavily from the Baroque and Rococo Art periods.
Nicola Samorì creates works of dark beauty and baroque drama. His paintings are gouged, distorted, melted and destroyed. This act of destruction is so deliberate and contrasting to the works of painterly skill beneath that it can almost be seen as violent.
Born Jheronimus van Aken circa 1450, Hieronymus Bosch's work was widely collected during his life, especially his macabre and nightmarish depictions of Hell. He was a pessimistic and fantasy artist of individualistic tastes. He greatly affected The Northern European art of the 16th century, with Pieter Bruegel the Elder and other famous artists following in his footsteps.
