One of the iconic masterpieces of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the painting "Circe Invidiosa" depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses in which Circe, seized by jealous rage, poisons the waters where Scylla bathes. Anthony Hobson says about the work "invested with an aura of menace, which has much to do with the powerful colour scheme of deep greens and blues [Waterhouse] employed so well"
