Gustave Doré (1832–83) was one of the most influential and powerful illustrators of the nineteenth century. His etching works for Dante's Divine Comedy were one of Doré's personal favorites and a epic milestone in dark art. The present volume reproduces with excellent clarity all 135 plates that Doré produced for The Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. Each plate is accompanied by appropriate lines from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow translation of Dante's work.
